International Mother Language Day is Celebrated every year on 21 February since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism in World.

- The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh
- It was approved at the UNESCO General Conference (1999) and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.
- UNESCO celebrates ‘Languages without borders’ on the occasion of International Mother Language Day 2020.
- The United Nations General Assembly had proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
- Globally 40% of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless, progress is being made in mother tongue based multilingual education with growing understanding of its importance, particularly in early schooling. Year of Languages.
- The Ministry of Human Resource and Development along with educational institutions and language institutions is celebrating the day as the Matribhasha Diwas in the country.

ઇતિહાસ
વિશ્વભરમાં શાંતિ અને બહુભાષીયવાદને પ્રોત્સાહન આપવા માટે અને તમામ માતૃભાષાઓનું રક્ષણ કરવા માટે 2000 થી આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય માતૃભાષા દિવસની નોંધણી કરવામાં આવી છે.
બાંગ્લાદેશમાં 1952 માં બંગાળી ભાષા ચળવળને ઓળખવા માટે 21 ફેબ્રુઆરીએ જોવા મળ્યું છે.
નવેમ્બર 1 999 માં યુનાઇટેડ નેશન્સ એજ્યુકેશનલ, સાયન્ટિફિક એન્ડ કલ્ચરલ ઓર્ગેનાઇઝેશન (યુનેસ્કો) ના જનરલ કોન્ફરન્સ દ્વારા આ દિવસની જાહેરાત કરવામાં આવી હતી. તેના ઠરાવ A / RES / 61/266 માં યુનાઇટેડ નેશન્સ જનરલ એસેમ્બલીએ તેના સભ્યના રાજ્યોને 16 મી મે, 200 9 ના રોજ “વિશ્વના લોકો દ્વારા ઉપયોગમાં લેવામાં આવતી બધી ભાષાઓના સંરક્ષણ અને રક્ષણને પ્રમોટ કરવા” કહેવામાં આવે છે.
રિઝોલ્યુશનમાં બહુભાષીયવાદ અને બહુસાંસ્કૃતિકવાદ દ્વારા વિવિધતામાં આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીયતા અને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રિય સમજને પ્રોત્સાહન આપવા માટે જનરલ એસેમ્બલીએ 2008 નું આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય વર્ષ તરીકે ઘોષણા કરી હતી.
રિઝોલ્યુશન રફીકુલ ઇસ્લામ દ્વારા સૂચવવામાં આવ્યું હતું, જે કેનેડાની વાનકુવરમાં વસતા બંગાળી છે. તેમણે 9 જાન્યુઆરી, 1998 ના રોજ કોફી અન્નાનને એક પત્ર લખ્યો હતો કે તેમને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય માતૃભાષા દિવસ જાહેર કરીને વિશ્વના લુપ્તતાને બચાવવા માટે એક પગલું ભરવાનું કહ્યું.
