Short Speech on National Science Day – 28 February 2024

In India, 28th of February is celebrated as National Science Day. On this day in 1928, Sir C.V. Raman discovered a phenomenon of scattering of photons named ‘Raman Effect’ after his name.

In 1930, he got Nobel Prize for his remarkable discovery and this was the first Nobel Prize for India in the field of Science. To mark the discovery of his famous phenomenon National Science Day is celebrated in India on the day each year. First National Science Day is celebrated on 28th February 1987.

It highlights the important role that science has in society and is celebrated each year on November 10. It also highlights the need to engage the wider public in debated on emerging scientific issues. World Science day was proclaimed by the UNESCO in 2001. First World Science Day is celebrated on 10 November 2002.

Objectives of the National Science Day

To make students and society at large aware about significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people. To acknowledge and learn from the efforts and achievements in the field of science for welfare of living beings.

To discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development of the science. To extend an opportunity to innovate to the scientific minded citizens in the country. To encourage the people and spread more & more awareness about Science and Technology.

Theme of National Science Day – 2024 is “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat“.

Idea 1 – DTH – Don the Teacher’s Hat

DTH – Don the Teacher’s Hat – We have donned the Teacher’s Hat today !

Experiments demonstrate – Science is fun. Science is applicable to many areas of everyday life. Students would get a chance to interact at different levels.

Experiments may include but are not limited to the following –

  1. Milky Rainbow
  2. Mini Volcano
  3. Soap Boats
  4. Light refraction with a water bottle
  5. Lava Lamp
  6. Storm in a Glass

Idea 2 – WHAT IF Key

WHAT IF Key

Ask students to post WHAT IF questions to you prior to your class (preferably a day or two before)

Follow up with a session where, teacher will take up these questions one -by-one and students will share their inputs. It enhances..

  • creative, critical and innovative thinking skills
  • scientific temper

Note – Questions can be taken as per class level.

  1. WHAT IF all animals were herbivores ?
  2. WHAT IF birds could speak to us?
  3. WHAT IF the sun was a cold ball of glowing gas?
  4. WHAT IF another advanced and smart species existed on earth?
  5. WHAT IF the moon didn’t exist?

Teacher will read statements to students will identify whether it’s fact or fiction.

If you are taking up with whole class, you can have their for FACTS and for FICTION.

  1. Babies have around 100 more bones than adults. – FACTS
  2. Earth is the only planet with water. – FICTION
  3. It takes 7 years to digest a chewing gum. – FICTION
  4. In 2.3 billion years it will be too hot for life to exist on the earth. – FACTS

  6. Stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve a razor – FACTS

Idea 4 – My Peer, My Paddle

My Peer, My Paddle

In it 2 children are required, one child will give his/her CRAZY QUESTION to his partner and vice-e-versa.

They have to research and find out the scientific answer to the peer’s question.

This activity could be assigned a week prior and on the National Science Day, students can share their peers’ question with reason/logic behind the same.

Teacher may announce the best pair based on the question and the logic explained.

Examples :

  1. Why does pool water or ocean water look blue in color?
  2. Do fish get thirsty?
  3. Why doesn’t super glue stick to the inside of the tube?

Idea 5 – Record Yourself

Ask students to perform any science experiment and record themselves with the help of a family member.

Alternatively, they can prepare a science working model as well on any topic assigned by their teacher as per their class level.

Idea 6 – Rendezvous with a Scientist

Scientists or Researchers could be invited on board and students can ask them questions that they are curious about.

Idea 7 – Science Fair / Science Exhibition

Organize Science Exhibition / Science Fair – Organize Virtual Science Fair or Go Live with projects, models, activities, competitions etc.
