CBSE Circular No. 75/2026: Celebration of Six Years of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) – Guidelines for Schools

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued Circular No. Acad-75/2026 dated 4 November 2026, requesting all CBSE-affiliated schools to participate in the nationwide celebration of six years of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA).

Through this initiative, schools are encouraged to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drug and substance abuse and motivate students, teachers and school staff to contribute towards building a healthy and drug-free India.

What is Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA)?

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan was launched on 15 August 2020 by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).

Over the years, the campaign has developed into a nationwide public participation movement involving:

  • State and Union Territory administrations.
  • Educational institutions and universities.
  • NGOs and civil society organisations.
  • Youth groups and community organisations.
  • Spiritual organisations and government departments.

As the campaign enters its seventh year, the six-year milestone provides an opportunity to renew the country’s commitment to preventing substance abuse.

Main Objectives of the Six-Year Celebration

The national celebration focuses on three major objectives:

1. National Visibility

To create a significant nationwide awareness movement around the shared vision of building a Nasha Mukt Bharat (Drug-Free India).

2. Mass Participation

To encourage large-scale public participation, with a target of mobilising 10 crore citizens through pledges and awareness activities on the national programme day.

3. Institutional Ownership

To make substance-abuse prevention a shared responsibility of government institutions, educational organisations, communities, private organisations and civil society.

Important Activities to Be Conducted by CBSE Schools

CBSE has requested all affiliated schools to organise and participate in the following activities:

1. Administration of NMBA e-Pledge

Students and teachers should be encouraged to take the Nasha Mukt Bharat e-Pledge online.

  • Essay-writing and speech competitions.
  • Street plays and cultural programmes.
  • Awareness sessions and exhibitions.
  • Sports and youth engagement activities.
  • Community awareness campaigns.
  • Drug-free India pledge drives.

3. Participation in the National Programme

Schools should ensure virtual participation of students, teachers and other school staff in the national-level celebration.

Three-Month Nationwide Awareness Campaign

According to the concept note attached to the CBSE circular, a three-month nationwide awareness and mobilisation campaign is proposed after the national-level celebration programme.

The initiative aims to transform the six-year anniversary into a broader public participation movement.

The campaign will involve schools, higher education institutions, government departments, NGOs, community organisations, youth groups and other stakeholders.

Role of Schools in Building a Drug-Free India

Schools play an important role in shaping students’ attitudes, behaviour and decision-making abilities. Teachers can help students understand the dangers of substance abuse and encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles.

CBSE-affiliated schools should actively promote:

  • Awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.
  • Positive peer relationships and responsible behaviour.
  • Healthy habits through sports and extracurricular activities.
  • Counselling and guidance for students.
  • Family and community participation in drug prevention.

By conducting these activities, schools can contribute meaningfully to the national mission of creating a healthier and drug-free society.
