Good Morning respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends,
Today, I feel honored to speak a few words on the occasion of International Chess Day, celebrated every year on 20th July across the world.
International Chess Day commemorates the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) on 20 July 1924 in Paris. This day encourages people of all ages to learn, enjoy, and promote the game of chess as a tool for education, creativity, and friendship.
Chess is much more than just a board game. It is a game of strategy, patience, discipline, and intelligence. Every move in chess teaches us to think before we act, analyze situations carefully, and make wise decisions. These are valuable life skills that help us both inside and outside the classroom.
Playing chess improves memory, concentration, logical thinking, problem-solving ability, and decision-making skills. It also teaches us the importance of planning ahead, accepting challenges, and learning from our mistakes. Whether we win or lose, every game becomes an opportunity to improve ourselves.
In today’s digital world, where distractions are everywhere, chess helps students develop focus and mental strength. It reminds us that success is not achieved by luck but through careful planning, practice, and perseverance.
India has a rich chess heritage. The game of chess is believed to have originated from the ancient Indian game Chaturanga. Our country has produced many world-class chess players, including Viswanathan Anand, India’s first Grandmaster and five-time World Chess Champion, whose achievements have inspired millions of young players. Today, India is also home to many talented Grandmasters who are making the nation proud on the global stage.
The theme of International Chess Day is to encourage everyone to experience the educational and social benefits of chess. Schools around the world celebrate this day by organizing chess tournaments, puzzle-solving competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, and awareness programs that inspire students to develop strategic thinking and sportsmanship.
Dear friends, every chess piece has a unique role, but victory is achieved only when all the pieces work together. Similarly, in life, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and determination lead us toward success.
