Speech on International Mother Language Day – 21 February 2026
A very good morning to everyone present here.
Today, 21st February, we are gathered to celebrate International Mother Language Day—a day that reminds us of the power, beauty, and importance of our mother tongue.
Language is not just a means of communication. It is the soul of our culture, the voice of our emotions, and the foundation of our identity. The first words we learn, the lullabies we hear, and the stories told by our grandparents—all come to us through our mother language.
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual education. This day also honours those brave people who sacrificed their lives in 1952 to protect their mother language—Bangla—showing the world that language is worth standing up for.
In a country like India, we are truly fortunate. We speak hundreds of languages and dialects. Each language carries its own history, wisdom, and traditions. When a language disappears, a part of human heritage is lost forever.
In today’s global world, learning English and other languages is important—but we must never forget our mother tongue. Respecting our language means respecting our parents, our culture, and our roots.
As students, we should:
- Speak our mother language with pride
- Read and write in it regularly
- Encourage others to value linguistic diversity
Let us promise today to preserve, promote, and protect our mother languages, because when we protect our language, we protect our identity.
I would like to end my speech with a beautiful thought:
“A language is not just words, it’s a way of seeing the world.”
Thank you.
Have a wonderful day
