What is Christian Education ?
The general definition of Christian Education is simply any kind of education that involves Christian faith. For my degree, that meant most it my classes were with other students training to be pastors and missionaries.
What are the theological approaches ?
I teach in a Christian school. The basic idea is that we believe that no person is born as a Christian, whatever the family background. It is a decision, a very personal decision which a person must make for themselves. Of course, if a young person is essentially brainwashed into a blind faith, when they head off to uni or the workforce their ‘faith’ generally does not survive. I don’t want to help produce fundamentalist robots, I want to help grow mature, thinking followers of Christ.
I teach Science – I teach to look at the data, and make your own conclusions. If you feel that the data is not complete enough, be wise enough to seek out more knowledge. Be open enough to change your mind, be humble enough to accept you may be wrong in the whole, and the you will be wrong in part. By that, I mean, I don’t know what an atom is anymore – an atom. If you know what an atom is, really know, then you either have waaaay more knowledge than me (if you don’t know what at least a wave function is, then this doesn’t apply to you), or you have too little knowledge.
It is the same with Christianity – It is a very simple religion, very simple: For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whosoever believes in him shall have eternal life. Simple. Believe in Jesus. And yet, the complexities and subtleties are so immense, humility is the best approach. I do not have all the answers, but I do teach frameworks which can be used to build on, both in Science and Christian topics.
The theology would come from a bunch of scriptures – teach a child the way to go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Consider nature. All scripture is useful. Whoever does not show love, is not from God. Come to me all you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest. Test everything, and hold to that which is good. And finally a favourite – Of making books there is no end, and much study wearies the bones.
I teach knowledge with a whiteboard, chalk(i am that old), experiments etc, but try to teach Christianity with an open and honest (but not perfect) life.
